Christmas Crack the Code Year 2
Eight Christmas jokes your Year 2 students have to add and subtract their way into — and the punchline only appears if the maths is right.
Christmas Crack the Code Year 2 turns the last weeks of term into number-fact practice your students volunteer for. Each of the eight sheets opens with a Christmas character asking a riddle, then gives twelve lettered sums and a row of blanks. Solve each sum, find its answer under a blank, write the letter above it, and the punchline appears. Every sum is addition or subtraction — answers run from 10 to 59, and the largest number on the page is 99. When students add, at least one number is a two-digit number; when they subtract, two-digit numbers are taken from numbers up to 99.
Because the letters have to spell something, the sheets mark themselves. A wrong answer gives a letter that makes nonsense of the joke, so students go back and check without being told to — and you are not marking 96 sums by hand.
Every sheet has its own Christmas character peering over the top of the grid, so the page looks like something worth doing rather than a page of sums.
A guaranteed hit in every Year 2 classroom every December!
Why teachers love it:
- Self-checking — the punchline only appears if the maths is right, so students correct themselves
- 96 sums across eight sheets — twelve per page, enough for real fact fluency
- Every answer on a sheet is different — no number points at two letters, so the code can never be ambiguous
- Pitched properly at Year 2 — every sum sits inside the Year 2 range, no drifting up or down mid-page
- Curriculum-linked, not curriculum-adjacent — written against ACARA v9 AC9M2N04 and AC9M2A02: adding and subtracting one- and two-digit numbers, and recalling addition facts to 20 with their related subtraction facts
- Photocopier friendly — clean black and white, no heavy ink, no grey fills
Perfect for:
- Year 2 maths lessons in Term 4 and through the Christmas period
- Number fact fluency and mental maths warm-ups
- Maths rotations, centres and independent practice
- Fast finisher and early finisher tasks
- Relief teacher folders and the last week of term
- Homework that students will actually bring back
