Place Value Mats
Make place value visual, hands-on and instantly understandable — for every learner in your room.
A well-designed place value mat transforms abstract number concepts into something students can see, build and reason about in real time. These printable mats give every student a consistent, structured workspace to decompose, compare and represent numbers — reducing confusion and building genuine number sense from the ground up.
Whether you're introducing place value for the first time or consolidating understanding across year levels, these mats work beautifully as an independent reference tool or as the centrepiece of a hands-on lesson with counters and blocks.
Why teachers love it:
- Builds genuine number sense — students move beyond rote counting to truly understand what each digit means and why its position matters.
- Perfect for concrete-to-abstract learning — pair with MAB blocks, counters or cubes for a hands-on experience before moving to written work.
- Flexible for differentiation — use across different year levels by simply focusing on the relevant place value columns for your learners.
- Zero prep — print, laminate if you like, and they're ready. Use them again and again all year.
- Reduces cognitive load — the structured layout gives students a clear visual anchor so they can focus on the maths, not the layout.
Perfect for:
- Guided maths groups and small-group instruction
- Whole-class lessons with manipulatives
- Independent practice and rotations
- Fast finishers and early finishers
- Students who need extra visual support
- Home learning and homework support
