Race into reading with the letter R — rolling with the /r/ sound, just like "rainbow"!

The letter R brings colour and energy to any alphabet display! This display card features the /r/ sound as in "rainbow", giving students a vivid, memorable keyword to connect with this rolling consonant. R is a wonderfully expressive letter — its sound is produced deep in the mouth and feels warm and resonant, making it one of the more distinctive phonemes for early learners to explore.

With its distinctive formation — a tall straight line, a bump at the top, and a short leg reaching out — R is a letter students quickly learn to recognise on the page and hear in words all around them.

Why teachers love it:

  • Resonant sound focus — highlights the /r/ sound as in "rainbow" with a joyful, colourful keyword
  • Formation reference — upper and lowercase R clearly displayed to support handwriting development
  • Memorable keyword — "rainbow" is a high-interest word students love, making the connection stick
  • Alphabet set compatible — works beautifully as part of the full alphabet display card collection
