Letter O
Oh! It's the letter O — a round, open vowel that sounds just like "octopus"!
Round and perfectly formed, the letter O is one of the five vowels that underpins so much of early reading. This display card features the short /o/ sound as in "octopus" — a fun, wiggly keyword that young learners adore. O is also one of the easiest letters to form (a simple circle!) which makes it a great confidence builder in early handwriting programmes.
Give the letter O a prominent spot in your alphabet display and watch students connect it to the short vowel sound in words like "on", "odd", and "octopus" all day long.
Why teachers love it:
- Short vowel focus — highlights the /o/ sound as in "octopus", a key vowel for decoding short CVC words
- Simple formation — the circular O shape is one of the first letters children can form successfully
- High-interest keyword — "octopus" captivates young learners and makes the sound memorable
- Alphabet set compatible — coordinates with the complete alphabet display card collection
Perfect for:
- Vowel sound displays and phonics focus boards
- Short vowel CVC word work (hot, dot, pot, log)
- Prep, Foundation, and Year 1 literacy programmes
- Letter of the week activities centred on O
- Ocean and sea creature themed classroom units
What's included:
A single printable PDF alphabet display card for the letter O, featuring upper and lowercase forms and a short /o/ sound keyword image.
