ARTWORK

Coastal Connections artwork by Holly Sanders

Holly Sanders is a proud Bundjalung woman from the North Coast of NSW, Australia. She currently lives and works as a teacher and artist on Yuin and Dharawal Countries. Through her art she aims to share her stories, culture and Country in a contemporary way.

Painting and maintaining cultural traditions is important for her identity, wellbeing and expresses the way she understands and respects her culture, ancestors and Country. She always looks to Country- the land, sky and the waters- and uses these images, stories and memories to paint. The patterns of Country at different times of the day and year influence heavily in her art.

Holly honours the continuing connection Bundjalung, Yuin and Dharawal people have to the land and acknowledges the stories, traditions and living cultures of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the oldest and longest continuing culture on the planet.

Artwork Meaning

This artwork is a celebration of vibrant Saltwater Country and is a reminder of our connection to the land and sea, our cultural obligations, and the vital role that mangroves and estuaries play in particular.

The circular designs scattered across the artwork represent the many sacred places that dot our coastline, each holding its own story and connection to our ancestors and old people. For saltwater people, this country is more than a place; it is our lifeblood, our old people, our history, and the keeper of our stories.

The meeting place symbols throughout the work symbolise the gatherings that have always taken place on these coastal areas. Connecting us to each other and to the land and ocean Country that sustains us.

The flora patterns and intricate lines represent the mangroves and their root systems. They symbolise resilience, interconnectedness, and the vital role mangroves play in sheltering and nurturing life. Mangroves can be seen as the 'mothers' of the sea, providing a safe haven for new life to flourish. This represents protection, nurturing, and the cycle of life and regeneration.

This artwork serves as a reminder of the intrinsic value of these delicate saltwater ecosystems and our ongoing cultural responsibilities to protect them. We sing to the sea, our ceremonies honour its spirits, and we teach our jarjums (children) the importance of listening to Saltwater Country and its whispers.

PRODUCT CARE

Keep your planner away from direct sunlight. Place in shaded areas, away from direct sunlight, windows, and skylights. Use a slightly dampened cloth to wipe the cover if it gets marked. Please be mindful of the surrounding environment and avoid placing it on rough or dirty surfaces.

DONATIONS

Part proceeds from the sale of our planners will be donated directly to the GO Foundation whose mission is to create a brighter future for Indigenous Australians.

OUR HAPPINESS GUARANTEE

We want nothing but the best for our incredible teaching community. That’s why if you’re not 100% in love with your teacher planner or any items purchased, send them back and we’ll give you a full refund, no questions asked!

Read our Returns Policy.

Please note: We do our absolute best to ensure photos have been taken to represent the actual teacher planner cover, however, these colours may look different in ‘real life’ as opposed to on your electronic screens (AKA your computer/laptop/tabletsSmartphones) due to variations in monitor settings and display quality. We also take great care with all our products, however, due to the manufacturing process, planners may have minor imperfections such as slight scratching and marks.

A full-page quote introduces each school term. The following are the date ranges for each section:

Late to the party

I was a little late with my teacher journal this year. Ended up getting one in Week 8 of Term 1. Love, love, love the product. Was super grateful to share the love and pass one on to my teacher aide too. 🤩💕
