Holly Sanders
Holly Sanders is a proud Bundjalung woman living and working as a teacher and artist on Yuin and Dharawal Countries. Through her art, she shares her stories, culture and Country in a contemporary way.
Her work is deeply rooted in storytelling and in celebrating Country- the land, waters, sea, and sky. Using colour, pattern and symbolism to convey these connections, Holly draws inspiration from the stories of Country as well as her own personal experiences.
As both an educator and an artist, Holly’s work serves as a vehicle for the celebration, storytelling and sharing culture. It aims to inspire pride and respect for the culture that has cared for this land for thousands of years. This connection to the world’s oldest continuous living cultures feeds her spirit and shapes every piece she creates.
Holly honours the ongoing connection of Bundjalung, Yuin and Dharawal peoples to land, water, sky, culture and kin, while acknowledging the enduring strength, wisdom and leadership of Elders past and present.

The Story Continues
Jingi walla! (Hello!) My journey as an artist started long before I could write. For part of my childhood I grew up on Country on the North Coast of NSW. Dealing with chronic illness as a child and an adult today, art became therapy, it helps build my resilience and provides a way to heal. That connection to art and painting has never left me. Today, I balance my creative practice with my work as a primary school teacher. These two worlds often merge; art is a visual language that allows me to pass on culture and storytelling to my students and to my own jarjums (children).
I always look to Country- the land, the sea and the sky. I am deeply inspired by the seasonal cycles and the way the colours and patterns of Country shift throughout the day and year. Every symbol, mark and line in my work carries meaning; they are reflections of culture and the responsibility and obligation we all have to care for Country.
I hope my art serves as a bridge for education and respect. I want people to feel a deep sense of connection to the land and to be inspired to learn the culture and stories behind the artwork. Our culture is vibrant, resilient and still here- it’s the oldest living culture on the planet. Ultimately, I hope people read the stories behind my work and it encourages a collective pride in our shared history.
