Lahni Barrass

Australian-based print and pattern designer Lahni Barrass is the creative force behind Softly Studio. Her joyful art transforms everyday objects into works of art, bringing beauty and happiness to the everyday. Inspired by her love of nature, Lahni’s work gracefully intertwines vibrant, imaginative energy with a soothing, gentle touch. Each piece begins by hand as a painting or drawing before evolving into beautiful patterns and illustrations that adorn a range of everyday items.

Through her art, Lahni invites you to rediscover life’s simple pleasures, find happiness in the smallest of moments, and surround yourself with pieces that spark joy.

The Story Continues

I was always the artsy kid at school, always drawing, making, or creating something beautiful. That love led me to study Textile Design at university, and I began my career in fashion, where I learnt the practical side of how prints really work on products.

When we began our family, I began painting again and turning them into textile designs, from there I began building Softly Studio very slowly and organically while raising my babies.

I was so excited by the idea that my patterns could live on beyond fabric. Entering the Mrs Edgar Artist Search in 2024 was a leap of faith, and seeing one of my early designs on the cover of their teacher planners was such a special, affirming moment. From there on, I’ve been so grateful to see my work featured on phone cases, wallpapers, quilting fabrics, bedlinen and stationery around the world, and it still feels a magical every time.

Everything around me. My family always laughs because I’m forever stopping to take photos of the tiniest things - a shadow on the footpath, a leaf or flower, a beautiful colour combination I spot out in the world. I’m constantly collecting little bits of beauty without even meaning to.

Inspiration is everywhere, if you slow down enough to notice it.

I'm all about making everyday objects more beautiful.

Life is full of ordinary moments, like wrapping a gift, making a bed, sewing a dress, writing in a planner, and I love the idea that my art can quietly add a little joy to those moments.

If something I’ve created makes someone smile, or feel cosy or calm, or a little nostalgic, that’s everything to me.
