Bring figurative language to life with this hands-on similes activity your class will actually enjoy.

This similes activity gives students the chance to explore, practise, and create similes in a structured, engaging way. Perfect for building figurative language skills in the middle primary years, this resource makes the concept of similes accessible and fun — helping students understand how comparing two things using "like" or "as" makes writing more vivid and powerful.

Whether you're introducing similes for the first time or reinforcing them as part of a broader writing unit, this resource does the heavy lifting for you.

Why teachers love it:

  • Clear and focused — targets similes specifically so students can build a solid understanding before moving on to other figurative language devices
  • Curriculum-connected — supports Australian Curriculum English language and literacy outcomes for primary students
  • Print and go — no prep required, just print and hand out
  • Versatile — works as a whole-class activity, small group task, or independent practice

Perfect for:

  • Writing workshops and literacy rotations
  • Introducing figurative language units
  • Consolidating simile knowledge after explicit teaching
  • Early finisher activities
  • Years 3–6 English lessons

What's included:
A printable PDF activity focusing on simile identification, matching, and creation tasks to build student confidence with this figurative language device.

Give your students the tools to write with flair — similes are just the beginning!
