Thirty Christmas jokes hiding behind the number facts to 20 — and the twos, fives and tens.

30 Christmas Riddles Year 1 turns the last weeks of term into number-fact practice your students volunteer for. Each of the ten sheets holds three festive riddles, a sixteen-slot code strip and a grid of sums — work out each answer, find it in the code strip, write the letter above it, and the punchline appears. Sheets 1 to 5 are addition and subtraction within 20. Sheets 6 to 10 move into multiplication and division, held strictly inside the twos, fives and tens — skip counting and doubling, not tables your Year 1s have not met yet.

Because the letters have to spell something, the sheets mark themselves. A wrong answer gives a letter that makes nonsense of the joke, so students go back and check without being told to — and you are not marking 274 sums by hand.

Every sheet also carries a large Christmas illustration that goes with its riddle, so the page looks like something worth doing rather than a page of sums.

A guaranteed hit in every Year 1 classroom every December!

Why teachers love it:

  • Self-checking — the punchline only appears if the maths is right, so students correct themselves
  • 274 sums across ten sheets — 23 to 34 per page, enough for real fact fluency
  • Pitched properly at Year 1 — every number fact sits inside the Year 1 range, no drifting up or down mid-page
  • Curriculum-linked, not curriculum-adjacent — written against ACARA v9 AC9M1N03, AC9M1N04 and AC9M1A01
  • Answer keys included — a separate answer key file with every sum solved and every punchline revealed
  • Photocopier friendly — clean black and white, no heavy ink, no grey fills

Perfect for:

  • Year 1 maths lessons in Term 4 and through the Christmas period
  • Number fact fluency and mental maths warm-ups
  • Maths rotations, centres and independent practice
  • Fast finisher and early finisher tasks
  • Relief teacher folders and the last week of term
  • Homework that students will actually bring back

What's included — 11 printable A4 pages, plus answer keys:

  • 10 riddle sheets — three riddles per sheet, a sixteen-slot code strip, and a large Christmas illustration matched to the riddle
  • 30 Christmas riddles in total — every one a proper joke with a punchline
  • 1 terms of use page
  • A separate 11-page answer key — every sum solved and every punchline spelled out

The skills covered:

  • addition and subtraction facts to 20
  • multiplication as skip counting by twos, fives and tens
  • division by 2, 5 and 10 as sharing and grouping

A gentle first meeting with × and ÷ in a context worth working for. Make the most of every learning day — these Christmas riddles prove maths can be the best part of December!
