30 Christmas Riddles Year 4
Thirty Christmas jokes locked behind three-digit subtraction and the tables to twelve.
30 Christmas Riddles Year 4 turns the last weeks of term into number-fact practice your students volunteer for. Each of the ten sheets holds three festive riddles, a sixteen-slot code strip and a grid of sums — work out each answer, find it in the code strip, write the letter above it, and the punchline appears. Sheets 1 to 5 are subtraction with minuends up to 115. Sheets 6 to 10 are the multiplication facts to twelve and division by 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12 — the trickier facts, not the comfortable ones.
Because the letters have to spell something, the sheets mark themselves. A wrong answer gives a letter that makes nonsense of the joke, so students go back and check without being told to — and you are not marking 274 sums by hand.
Every sheet also carries a large Christmas illustration that goes with its riddle, so the page looks like something worth doing rather than a page of sums.
A guaranteed hit in every Year 4 classroom every December!
Why teachers love it:
- Self-checking — the punchline only appears if the maths is right, so students correct themselves
- 274 sums across ten sheets — 23 to 34 per page, enough for real fact fluency
- Pitched properly at Year 4 — every number fact sits inside the Year 4 range, no drifting up or down mid-page
- Curriculum-linked, not curriculum-adjacent — written against ACARA v9 AC9M4N06 and AC9M4A02
- Answer keys included — a separate answer key file with every sum solved and every punchline revealed
- Photocopier friendly — clean black and white, no heavy ink, no grey fills
